I would be wary of using them for cruising, though, except maybe Alaska. They should be good on any cruise into or out of the US, not just closed loop cruises, because EDLs are good for arrivals/departures by sea. Technically they should be valid by themselves for a cruise without a birth certificate. I am planning to get one at my next license renewal, since I go up to Canada quite a bit and I would no longer have to carry my passport just for that. You have to be a state resident to get one, and have to prove both citizenship (birth certificate, passport, naturalization certificate) and state residency (even if you have held a normal state license for years). Only a few states offer them, WA and NY to my certain knowledge, I think VT may now, too, and maybe MI, since the OP is from MI and probably has a reason for asking. Even for a closed-loop cruise, wouldn't you need the DL and a birth certificate?Įnhanced Driver's Licenses are the equivalent of passport cards, and prove citizenship for land and sea crossings. What is an "enhanced driver's license"? I've never heard of one.
